The people of Israel did not reach their Promised Land because of their "unbelief". Even after God delivered them out of Egypt, walked them through the Red Sea, rained manna on them ... they could not reach their Promised Land.
Why was "unbelief" stirred in their heart? Unbelief was because they moved their focus away from God which in turn moved them away from God's favor. It ultimately resulted in not reaching their Promised Land.
The one step process to increase faith and to reach our Promised Land (of rest in Jesus Christ) and to remain in His unmerited favour is focusing on Jesus at all times. As we keep our focus on Jesus, we move away from every "unbelief" that limits us from experiencing the unmated favour of God.
Meditating on Hebrews chapter 3 brings out this truth beautifully. Let us look at few scriptures:
Hebrews 3:7-14
Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says:
“Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion, In the day of trial in the wilderness, Where your fathers tested Me, tried Me, And saw My works forty years. Therefore I was angry with that generation, And said, ‘They always go astray in their heart, And they have not known My ways.’
So I swore in My wrath, ‘They shall not enter My rest.’ ”
Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end.
